In the court of public opinion, most Americans would pin the blame on Republican lawmakers if the country goes over the fiscal cliff.
A new survey by the Pew Research Center that concluded last Sunday found that 53 percent of respondents will hold Republicans responsible if no deal is reached with the White House to stop the rescinding of tax breaks for all Americans and the enactment of deep automatic spending reductions, which economists say will lead to another recession.
Just 27 percent of respondents said that the onus should fall on President Obama if the two sides can’t reach an agreement by the end of the month….READ MORE

Americans don’t trust Republicans and Democrats to get along, it seems.
A new poll from the Pew Research Center finds that 51 percent of Americans don’t believe a deal will reached between President Obama and Republicans in Congress regarding the so-called “fiscal cliff,” the tax increases and spending cuts that will go into effect if there is no bargain. The poll found that 38 percent believe a deal will be reached, while 11 percent responded that they don’t know.
Republicans are more skeptical than Democrats, according to the poll. Among the 51 percent who doubt an agreement will be reached by the Jan. 1 deadline, 66 percent were Republicans, while only 40 percent were Democrats. And among those who believe that there will be a deal, just 25 percent were Republicans and 47 were Democrats….READ MORE

Not even a powerful East Coast storm can stave off the momentum of Mitt Romney in Gallup’s daily tracking poll of likely voters.
On Monday, as the large portion of the country was battered by Hurricane Sandy, Romney picked up a point nationally on President Obama, leading 51 percent to 46 percent.
Since Gallup’s tracking poll averages seven days of statistics, it includes the entirety of the October 29 debate on foreign affairs, suggesting that the incumbent got no bounce from his last meeting with Romney, which many pundits said Obama won….READ MORE

As it enters its frenetic final week, the presidential race is drawing more close attention than any such contest in 28 years, a testament to a campaign that has been the closest by some measures in pre-election polls dating back even further — to 1960, or even to the early days of polling in 1936.
Support for President Obama and Mitt Romney has averaged 48-48 percent since September, the closest in ABC/Washington Post polls — or Gallup polls before them — in comparable periods dating back 76 years. It’s also the first contest since 1960 in which neither candidate, in this period, has exceeded 50 percent support (adjusting for third-party vote where applicable).
Holding steady the past three days, the gap is now a single point, with 49 percent support for Romney among likely voters, and 48 percent for Obama in this poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates. At this stage in 2008, Obama had held majority support since Oct. 11….READ MORE

Half of likely voters now prefer Mitt Romney for president and 46% back President Barack Obama in Gallup interviewing through Monday.
While Romney’s four-percentage-point advantage is not statistically significant, he has consistently edged ahead of Obama each of the past several days in Gallup’s seven-day rolling averages conducted entirely after the Oct. 3 presidential debate. Prior to that debate — regarded as a decisive Romney win by political experts and Americans who watched it — Romney averaged less than a one-point lead over Obama among likely voters….READ MORE
